George Mason University’s Team 4Ward took first place at Project S.E.R.V.E.’s third annual National Design Competition with a residual limb warming device designed for Team USA Paralympic athlete Dan Rizzieri.

On April 30, U.S. Navy veteran Mary Rita Emmerick has her service dog, named Medical Equipment, demonstrate the custom cart a group of Colorado School of Mines students made for her. The special cart-to-harness system allows Medical Equipment to safely pull heavier items like groceries and quilting supplies that Emmerick has difficulty carrying.

At San Diego State University, engineering goes beyond the classroom. This spring, Senior Design Day will showcase nearly 100 student projects shaped by months of hands-on problem solving, collaboration, and innovation. Hosted by SDSU’s College of Engineering on May 6, the event highlights solutions focused on accessibility, public safety, environmental challenges, and more.

The 2026 competition featured 11 teams from 10 universities nationwide, with students presenting prototypes, conducting live demonstrations and undergoing evaluation by a panel of judges from engineering, adaptive sports and industry backgrounds.

Engineering students at the Colorado School of Mines have spent the last year working to create an adaptive mobility device for a US Navy veteran, living in Nebraska.

Project S.E.R.V.E. announced the winners of its 2026 National Design Competition, sponsored by PenFed Credit Union and held in partnership with the Virginia Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering.
