Mines’ capstone work demonstrates inventions and experience

For the past nine months, seniors at Colorado School of Mines have been using engineering to solve real-world challenges—developing designs and technologies that improve accessibility, independence, and everyday life.

One of those projects focused on U.S. Navy veteran Mary Rita Emmerick and her service dog, Medical Equipment. A team of students designed a custom cart-and-harness system that allows the dog to safely pull heavier items like groceries and quilting supplies that Emmerick has difficulty carrying on her own.

It’s a thoughtful example of what can happen when students build with a person’s daily life in mind.
